Mama Rochel

For many who recently visited Kever Rochel- the grave of our ancestral mother Rachel- the answer would be at this holy site.

Children need mothers and that need to be loved, heard, and understood doesn’t go away when we grow up.Kever Rochel is a unique experience because it gives you the chance to connect to your spiritual mother. Praying at this spot feels direct and intimate.

Yaakov- or Jacob, Rachel’s husband, chose this out-of-the-way burial plot for his wife because he knew prophetically that the Jewish people would pass this spot on their way to exile. Yaakov wanted the Jewish people to have a place to pour out their hearts during that darkest of times on their way out of Israel. And so the role of Mama Rochel as a listening ear has been going on for literally thousands of years.

I tried to capture the beauty of this traditional prayer spot in my painting. Recent construction has significantly changed the landscape around this burial plot, but the iconic building and hills will always represent Rachel’s Tomb to me.
